Course Description

Have you ever wanted to create an API for Django but didn't know where to start? Fed up with incomplete YouTube videos and poorly written tutorials? Do you have an existing Django project that you want to add an API to? Is the documentation for the Django REST Framework too complicated to understand?

THEN THIS IS THE COURSE FOR YOU!

In my course, I will walk you through the Django REST Framework from beginning to end! I'm a self-taught programmer so I know what it feels like to start from scratch. I care about your learning, but even more importantly... I care about you!

In this course we will:

  1. Learn what REST APIs are and how to use them

  2. Create a Reddit clone with API calls to make and delete posts, vote on posts and more!

  3. Add API functionality to an existing Django project

Hi! I'm Nick, and I love to code. About five years ago I decided that I wanted to learn to code, but I had limited access to programming resources, and I was getting frustrated with all of the YouTube videos and online tutorials out there. I experimented, struggled, and definitely failed a lot, but I finally got the hang of it, so I decided that I wanted to change the way that people learned to code, and I started teaching. My experience as an online student has directly influenced my teaching style, because I know what it is like to be in your shoes.

When Apple announced their new programming language, Swift, in 2014, I made my big online teaching debut and created the internet's first Swift course. Since that time, I have become a full-time online instructor and I now have courses not only in Swift, but also in iOS, Android, Django, Kotlin, Python, HTML, Blockchain, etc. I have also created five iOS apps from scratch that are currently live in the App Store and are being used by thousands of users worldwide.

I love sharing my excitement for coding with my students, and I try to make learning as fun and as easy as possible. Thanks for being part of my coding community!

Even though is a little old this course is still awesome. I must say that I'm coming from other courses where I learned most of Django basics and theory so if you come here as a complete beginner and know nothing about Django you will feel completely lost so before taking this course I'd recommend to learn the basics of Django before.

Fantastic showcase of creating APIs with django. The instructor hit a topic that few others have: adding an api to an existing site. I'd love to see additions like Viewsets and nested relationships, but regardless, this course was exactly what i wanted.

Really an excellent, enjoyable and clear course to explain the fundamentals of the DRF. I have taken several courses on this subject before, but I think this was the clearest, without overloading the student with too many unneeded details. This course definitely leaves me with the knowledge and confidence (and desire!) needed to dive deeper into the DRF on my own.

Nick Walter is honestly the best Django teacher on Udemy and better than YouTube teachers. I feel like I actually learned something when I take his courses. I know when it comes to development there are several layouts you can take when making a project but his seems to be the most organized and straightforward. when I took his Django3 course felt like i actually understood how to use Django afterwards and was able to add to my portfolio website on my own because of what I learned from him. Now I'm taking the rest_framework course because I know that I am going to walk away with an understanding on how to use framework that I can build upon. I'm hoping he does more Django tutorials like channels, websockets and other Django extensions. Thanks Nick!

The course is really basic. No JWT authentication, no HATEOS, no unit testing, no integration tests, no dependency management. I am not sure if that is how you would structure a project, but it didn't seem very well structured.

I love this guy. He's entertaining to listen to and has so much enthusiasm. He also gives more explanation than a lot of the walk-through style classes on Udemy. So many of them are just "type this, then type this." This guy tells you why you are typing it.

Nick gets right into it, without going over a million other pieces of software or unnecessary stuff, and he uses the simplest ways of getting things done, which I found very helpful. I tried another course, highly rated, but honestly this one is a much better fit for me.

Nick's introductory courses are some of the best on the website. He explains great on most concepts, but there are sometimes(rarely) where he explains badly or doesn't explain at all. Still would highly recommend it because of his personality and explanations.

Thanks Nick, for such a crisp and focused course on API framework, really helped me a lot. Your simplistic teaching method is awesome and you know exactly what a beginner or intermediate developer would be looking for. Thanks again for such a wonderful course. All the best Cheers Sankalp

Awesome course, Nick! One suggestion for if this course was to be extended more, is to show how to consume the API in mobile or web apps and best practice on securely storing auth tokens (although 'curl' was enough as an example).
