Course Description
Enhance your drawing skills with this comprehensive course on rendering techniques. Our team of experienced instructors will help you take your art to the next level by teaching you how to add shading, inking, and coloring to your drawings. In addition to the comprehensive instruction and guidance provided by our team of experienced instructors, this course also includes assignments and exercises for each unit to help you practice and hone your skills.
Rendering is an essential part of creating three-dimensional and realistic artwork. Without it, your drawings may appear flat and lifeless. That's why we've gathered some of the best instructors and professionals in the field to guide you through the process.
The course begins with units on lighting, taught by Ed Foychuk. Understanding lighting is crucial before you start rendering, as it helps you determine where and why to apply certain techniques. Ed covers a range of topics, from basic to advanced, to give you a solid foundation in this important subject.
Next, Mike Van Orden will teach you various pencil techniques to bring your drawings to life. You'll learn how to use the pencil in different ways to take advantage of the lighting concepts you learned in the previous units.
Chris Graves will then show you his rendering process and demonstrate how pencils can be used to create detailed and dynamic characters.
Walden Wong, a master inker, will teach you how to approach rendering with inks, both digitally and traditionally. You'll learn techniques and approaches that professionals use to add depth and detail to their artwork.
Tim Goernert will provide more in-depth instruction on inking various subjects, explaining his reasoning for each pen stroke and step of the process using digital inks.
Finally, Deth Phimmasone will cover the ins and outs of rendering with markers. He'll discuss the supplies he recommends and demonstrate different techniques to help you bring your drawings to life.
By the end of this course, you'll have a deep understanding of the "where" and "why" of rendering and feel more confident in your skills. You'll also have the opportunity to get personal contact with the course tutor, as well as lifetime access to course materials and exercise worksheets. Plus, you'll have the support of the Udemy Q&A forum and the security of a 30-day money-back guarantee. Ed Foychuk
Hi guys! I'm Ed Foychuk, and I've been a professional illustrator for decades now. Most of my adult life I was based in Asia, so a lot of the work I have from that period is of an animation style. I did however grow up on Canada, so western comic books are definitely my foundation.
I've got a background in Education and Strength Training, and always wondered how I'd combine all of my passions and worlds... and then Udemy came on the scene! I love creating courses for you, my students. I've got 20 so far, and dad jokes aside, I think my passion shines through. My specialties are in breaking down subjects, understanding structures, Anatomy, and story telling.
At 20+ courses published on this site, I've gained a lot of experience. I've learned so much from my students, and really appreciate all of the feedback and support given.
I love working as a freelance illustrator and instructor. It's opened up so many possibilities in my life, and I want to share that all with you.

I have been interested in learning about how to render in comics, and when I saw this course I thought I would give this a chance. And let me tell you, it is worth it. I would like to take the time to thank the instructors for the lessons. I have learned a lot from this course. If you are interested in learning how to render in comics then I recommend this course.

Filled with useful information with plenty of opportunity to practice along with the instruction.

The material is solid; the only reason I'm dropping some stars is for the sloppy production quality. The sound is completely botched on a few of the lessons. The logo music is melodramatic for a course, on the in and the out for each lesson, and is poorly balanced and kind of ear-splitting if you aren't ready for it. Lastly, some videos seem to have been done with literally a hand-held camera facing a screen. However, if you want an industry inside on inking, penciling, and coloring techniques, the material is here; I just wish they'd spent more time properly mastering the whole thing.

I have learned a lot in a short amount of time and relearned some things I was struggling with. I recommend this course to both beginner and advanced artists who are looking for new ways to improve their art! Thank you

the course was very helpful. I specifically enjoyed the topics on lighting and textures that Ed Foychuck covered. I was however not very pleased with the other teachers who explained on rendering as they did not explain how I can use the rendering effects on surfaces such as clouds smoke, waterbubbles skin tones and different types of hair such as dreadlocks, hard hair and extremely curly hair.I would also like to know how to use the hatch lines to emphasize action as in the comic contes Ed Foychuck judged I noticed I severely lack an understanding on that.

Great content that is extremely helpful for anyone trying to learn how to add the final details to an image!! I learned so much from this course, it fells like unlocking the secret to comic art. If you take these lessons, you will discover the same secrets!!

Oh my. I feel more confident colouring and shading now. These two courses were full of insight and I cannot express how much I have enjoyed it. I’m getting there slowly with my drawing and these courses have helped me immensely. Cheers Ed. Btw Walden is a legend and Deth, I can’t believe he can do that with markers only. Man. Thanks again.

I thought this was a great course. I am a beginner and every video contained something I was able to use in my pictures! I look forward to taking more courses from Ed.
