iOS 9 and Swift 2: From Beginner to Paid Professional™ (Udemy.com)

The BEST online iOS 9 Swift 2 course online. Lets learn iOS 9 & Swift 2

Created by: Mark Price

Last updated June 2017

Our take

Based on the ratings of 5,688 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is the first edition of Devslopes' beginner-to-professional iOS series, recorded for iOS 9 and Swift 2 and last updated in June 2017. It runs about 51 hours across 177 lectures and 18 sections, starting with installation, setup and Git, working through arrays, loops, and OOP, then building a table-driven app, a Pokedex, and a Firebase social network before covering App Store submission and career prep. It was written for career changers with little or no programming experience, and around 37,000 students have enrolled.

Reviewers like the teaching more than anything. Mark Price types the code in live instead of pasting it, makes the occasional mistake, and shows how to track it down. Another reviewer says the hands-on approach makes the material stick. Several call his style informal and engaging, and a couple report building their own apps afterwards. Complaints are milder than the age of the course suggests. A four-star reviewer wanted more on Core Data and less non-programming filler, and a one-star review says the community forum was no help when they got stuck. Roughly 90 percent of 5,688 reviews are four or five stars.

The problem is the calendar, not the content. Swift 2 code will not compile in a current Xcode, so a beginner following along will hit errors the videos never address. Newer iOS 10 and iOS 11 editions of this course sit beside it here and are the obvious first stop. Pick this one only if you already own it or specifically want the Firebase and Pokedex projects in their original form.

Best forPeople who already own it or want Mark Price's teaching style and accept rewriting Swift 2 code as they go.
Skip it ifYou want code that compiles in current Xcode; Swift 2 syntax broke years ago and newer editions of this same course exist.

Pros

  • Mark Price types the code in live and debugs his own slips on camera, which one reviewer calls very valuable
  • Project-heavy syllabus: a Pokedex, a Firebase social network, facial recognition, and App Store submission
  • Written for true beginners; reviewers who started from zero report building their own apps
  • About 90 percent of 5,688 reviews are four or five stars, a strong record for a course this old

Cons

  • Built on Swift 2 and iOS 9, last updated June 2017; the code no longer compiles in current Xcode
  • Core Data is barely touched and one reviewer found the non-coding content padded out the runtime
  • Help when stuck may be scarce; a one-star review got nowhere asking the community for help
He also types the code in, during the lessons, instead of cut-n-pasting. You actually get to see him make an occasional error, and how to investigate, and fix issues as they come up.
B. James Maher, a student

Aimed at complete beginners with a Mac; experienced programmers will find the Swift basics slow, per the course's own audience note.

Course Description

iOS 9 and Swift 2 developers are some of the highest paid coders throughout the planet right now. There couldn't be a better time to join the world of app development.

About this iOS 9 & Swift 2 Course

You are going to learn everything you need to know to be able to work professionally as a Jr. iOS 9 developer. Even if you aren't interested in a career change this course will give you the necessary skills to build and publish iPhone and iPad apps to the Apple App Store.

All concepts and apps built within this course are designed with careful purpose. You won't be learning some obscure concept just to learn that concept - you will learn the technologies and principles that actually matter when building professional applications.

You will learn Swift 2 and iOS 9.

Why Choose this iOS 9 & Swift 2 Course?

So many programming courses are built by people who are just looking to make a buck. They learn the coding skills literally right before they teach them! I am a professional iOS developer and have built 58 mobile apps to date with both Swift 2 and Objective-C. I also am a professional instructor at a coding bootcamp. I know what skills you will use in the industry (It is so important to learn Swift). I know how to help you learn. Most importantly, I am most interested in helping you change careers and/or increase your income.

Students I have helped have jumped from as little as $32,000 a year to $85,000 a year in a matter of months.

Other courses take you from A-Z teaching you each iOS concept one by one. This is not effective for retaining knowledge - information overload. This course will teach you iOS 9 and programming concepts in the order of importance - what potential employers are looking for and the core skills you need to make professional applications. Then you will test against those principles and build exercises to practice what you have learned. We will cover all of iOS 9 and Swift 2, but everything is prioritized for your benefit.

iOS 9 & Swift 2 Course Structure

You should watch the concepts and follow along building what we build in the videos. Then build the exercises and do the warmups on your own. If you really want to become a great iOS & Swift developer watch the concepts, and then do the exercises, warmups, and quizzes.

Warmups

Warmups will help you learn how to think like a programmer and are more algorithmic based. It is important to keep training your brain.

Quizzes

This course will be treated as closely to an live in-person course as possible. After each core principle is taught you will be given real industry-standard interview questions, meaning questions that you would likely be asked in a iOS development job interview.

Exercises

At the end of each core principle you will be given an exercise that you must build that demonstrates the skills you have just learned.

Moreover, he is energetic and passionate about making learning process fun." - Amit Chaudhari

"It is obvious that he is passionate about teaching coding. He makes sometimes dry subjects very entertaining with his humor and overall teaching style. He never loses patience with students and takes the time to make sure you understand.
Mark also goes the extra mile with students. Whenever I would be stuck or in need of help on a project he would take time to help me. I was lucky he took the time to get to know me and assist in the understand subjects I had difficulty with." - Jacob Evans

"...More impressive is his ability to teach. He's patient, optimistic, and able to take complex ideas and teach them with examples and in ways that are digestible, energetic, and fun. He's taught bootcamps and mentored many developers that I know. As a teacher and mentor, I couldn't give anyone a higher recommendation. If you can enlist his tutelage, you're in good hands." - Jonathan Wood

"Mark is a smart, experienced, patient mentor, teacher and iOS Engineer. As I have gone from knowing nothing about iOS to full fledge iOS engineer Mark has been there every step of the way to both guide and encourage." - Pearson Basham creator of NoThyme iOS App

"He has this way of teaching that captivates your attention and makes all the ones and zeros come to life. Mark taught me that learning computer science doesn't have to be the way it was in college, simply put: boring, time-consuming, and overwhelming. He mentored me in the course materials and I am an even better developer today and I make a lot more money too, all because of the example Mark set and the individual time he spent with me.

Seriously, an hour spent with this man teaching you technical subjects will be worth 100 hours spent in another course or bootcamp taught by someone else" -
Erik Slack

A great course and a wonderful teacher. Thanks Mark Sir. It's been a wonderful experience learning from you. I just wanted to know more about basics of Swift and Objective C and how to read OBJC apis so I encountered small issues while building my own app. Apart from that everything is wonderful.

By Anan Lap on 7/27/2016

Everything is valuable except I cannot ask when I have a trouble. Although there is community for asking. But all I received from the community is telling me to ask another one in the same country instead.

By Lydia Chang on 6/5/2016

Thanks Mark for creating such an inspiring course! I myself is a College student, and I'm too sick to take one more lecture-style courses. Learning is meant to be fun like this! More and clearer explanation would make this course perfect. Keep up the good work!

By Mark Phillips on 5/1/2016

I normally wait until the end of courses to rate them, but this has been by far one of the best programming courses I've ever taken. I come from a Java background and have spent years in college learning coding, and I'm a bit newer to Objective C/Swift style coding and I've just never come across someone so thorough. I really wish you had a course on android dev as well, because this is quality like I haven't personally experienced before. If you're new to software developing in general, or iOS, I strongly suggest this course. The fundamentals taught here alone are worth the investment into becoming a successful developer, iOS or not. I'm anxious to start the intermediate iOS dev course! Amazing work!

By Jared Sobol on 4/15/2016

This is a great course! I have learned so much and I continue to become a better IOS Dev everyday. The only problem I have with the course is the coverage of auto layout. I feel like auto layout deserves its own section due to how complex and how much practice is needed to become competent with it. Besides that this course is awesome!

By Jon Padden on 2/26/2016

Completed the course, and it was a fantastic introduction to programming with iOS / Swift. Definitely would recommend taking a class from Mark. NOTE: There is a newer version of this course. Mark has been great about keeping this course updated w/ new developments and features. But if you're new, you should start with his "iOS 10 & Swift 3" course, so you're starting off on the latest version. Mark is a laid-back instructor, who focuses more on real-world tips than textbook instruction. It works well for the course, but you'll occasionally find yourself having to Google a few concepts he glosses over. Sometimes re-watching his videos helps, but other times you'll just need to search the web for help. No biggie, just don't let it throw you off from an otherwise good course. Also, TAKE NOTES. There's no compendium or cheat-sheet for each lesson; he just codes and explains as he goes. I found two things helped: (1) when typing along with mark, I typed many comments to keep track of his explanations. And (2) I kept a bunch of Mac Notes on key lessons (how to make a UITableView, how to implement sound, etc...) so I could easily go back to the important bits of code. Thanks Mark for a great course! I'll be signing up for your intermediate class soon.

At first I didn't like Mark or his teaching style or his voice or his design choices. In fact I thought this course was going to suck since it was on Udemy of all places. Guess what? I still don't like Marks design choices but he teaches you how to make your own clearly and concisely. Not only that but he has you do it in every app you make during this course so you the concepts are reinforced. The video quality improves throughout as well. I got used to the teaching style and by the time I got to video 100 I really appreciate the loose, unscripted style versus some heavily edited version. Some lectures I feel are a bit long winded but ultimately you do learn to be a pro.

By Nice One on 12/29/2015

Really good course... but the course assumes you've been exposed to IOS development and have some background in programming. Covers topics really fast at times or doesn't fully explain things.

By Mhofu Yemukono on 11/26/2015

This is the most complete and best iOS 9 & Swift course on udemy because he keeps the learner engaged, very responsive to questions, explains & demonstrates complex things in an easy way to understand, teaches and emphasis good programming habits for example data encapsulation, code reusability, reading documentation rather than just watching him code, and they is also a chatroom for students to get additional help etc. In terms of cons the only thing I can think of is some of the videos are long but for what I am getting out of the course I can live with that by pausing the video and returning from where I left of. If you want a career building iOS Apps this is the Course for you. Thanks and keep up the good work Mark!

By William Ransom on 10/26/2015

Let me begin by thanking Mark for putting this course out there. I have looked at and signed up for several Swift courses on Udemy, and they are all basically the same and leave a lot to be desired. When I found this course it pushed me to challenge myself any further, and I feel like when I complete this course I could write any app that my heart desires. He covers the information so well and makes it easy to understand. He also provides so many great examples and further ways to learn that I am excited every time I sit down to start a new lecture. This course really is for any from beginner or experienced developer who wants to take there programming to the next level. Great course!
