James Doyle

Hi, I'm James. I have helped thousands of people learn how to develop their own games in Unity, and whether you're a first-time developer, or need to refresh your skills, I can help you learn to make the games you want to make.

With a bachelors degree in Computer Science and a background working in independent game development, I have been helping others to create their own games and release them on multiple platforms.

I believe in helping you learn by teaching code in context, so rather than having to memorize a bunch of stuff you've never seen before, you learn how each coding concept can be applied to real working problems in your games.

I can't wait to help you learn all about making your own games and how to make them a success.

So why not start learning to make games with me now?

See you soon!

James

Easy to follow through with each sections. It's explained simple enough for the novice C# coder to understand. One thing this course should need is a way to save game results that is similar to the Vampire Survivor game where collecting coins after death or completing a stage can be used in permanent upgrades.

I'm familiar with coding but have never really learned how to write it. This course was good at teaching foundational skills while also incorporating them into more complex systems. By the end of the course, I really felt like I understood what my code was doing and why, at least for the most part. Towards the end of the course, the pace did get noticeably faster, and rather than saying things like "drag the x script into the x object and then click on the x" it devolved a little into "now drag this over here and open this". It meant I had to keep stopping the video and going back to rewatch parts, even though I was primarily listening. Aside from some minor pacing, this was a great course and really taught me a ton. I am looking forward to checking out more of your courses!!

This was my latest in my (large) James Doyle collection, and it was exceptional as always! James has a way of explaining things so they make sense. He let's you know when you should do more research, and when you should just go with the flow. I learned techniques in this course that I can apply to other genres, and other prototypes that I'm building, such as knock back and object pooling. James gives you the foundational knowledge to make a VS style game, gets you started with a basic prototype, and encourages you to take it as far as you'd like. Before I built the game I added in an energy ball that shoots at the closest enemy. I used the fireball sprite, but turned it green. I thoroughly recommend this course! My other favourite from James is his Tower Defense course.

A decent course for beginners. I especially like the spawning and stats system, as well as weapon scaling. The coding could be improved though. Singleton is abused a bit too much, and too many public variables where just using SerializedField is enough. Also, if object pooling is used for the damage number, it should be applied for spawning enemies and maybe projectiles too. But the basic framework of this game is great, an intermediate developer like my self (6 months experience) can easily expand on it with more weapons, different levels, more complex enemy behaviors, boss fights. etc.

The course is very good as well as the tutor, however. If you like to practice safe coding and/or making things readable for yourself, unless you do it on your own spare time, this course doesn't really do that for you or doesn't show you the correct way things should be done. For example, many variables that would just be enough to be under [SerializeField] were stated as "public", meaning some variables were not protected from tinkering outside of the script, even though they were never supposed to be called out anywhere else. Towards the end the tutor got a tad bit faster than I was able to keep up most of the time. There were also no challenge based homeworks along the way and it was mostly just copy and paste course, although the tutor encourages to make it your own. However, for the next courses, adding some little challenges for the students to figure out on their own would be a great addition indeed. But, at the end of the day, I did learn a ton through this course, I also tried to make things with safe practices in mind which made me think about what should be accessible and what shouldn't be inside script and all in all this is a great course if you are interested in Vampire Survivors-type game. Props to the tutor, I hope to see more from you, James.

This course is a concise and effective introduction to Unity and C# coding, both well suited to those with lots of coding experience just getting into Unity and those who might be new to coding trying to get a grasp of the logic of game design. Vampire Survivor style games feature a lot of core fundamentals of game design that can apply to a wide variety of modes and genres - I primarily develop life sims, visual novels, and similar forms of interactive fiction and this course has set me up nicely to begin those projects in Unity.

Just to clarify what this review is based on: I'm a long-time realtime developer, since Unity 4. Wanted to get some technical insight/inspiration into this through the course. TLDR: In summary, everything is well explained from the beginning to the finished application, but the code quality leaves much to be desired. Still a recommendation for teaching the mindset and basics of such games. --- Topic - Game Logic: It provides a very good introduction to the mindset and basics of such games. A clear recommendation if this is the goal. Topic - Logic Depth: Some systems are nicely illustrated with several variants and examples. Topic - Unity: Unfortunately only old systems are used, such as the old input system, and unfortunately too much is done on the update thread, which could be extracted. Topic - Clean Coding: The code works and has basic encapsulation. Otherwise, this is just a good entry point for less experienced people. Professionals will have to go through the "public" hell, amongst other things.

I'm enjoying the process of working through James' course, but I often find my newbie knowledge getting in the way of understanding just what he's doing. In some cases, I've hit walls for hours where I just don't understand. I recommend coming into this course with at least SOME knowledge of C#--I had none, and wound up enrolling in another C# class just to get a better idea of what he was up to. That said, what he's doing is fairly simple, and I have a game I can mess around with. I look forward to learning more!

I am satisfied with the content that I wanted to learn. The beginning of the book is relatively simple and easy to get into, The second half was a little more difficult, and I felt like I was making progress one step at a time. I would like to take the course again when a new game series comes out. Thank you very much.

It's been great so far, I'm into section 7 at the moment. I love the technical explanations. He isn't just walking you thru a tutorial, he is teaching how each piece of the script works. He takes ~7-15 minutes on each video in each section where a YouTube video would blaze through a whole section in 10-15 minutes. It makes for a slightly slower paced and in-depth look at each topic. I feel like I'm understanding why I'm doing something instead of blindly following a tutorial. I wish there was more focus on programming paradigms like keeping your code de-coupled.
