Course Description
What do you think optimisation of a game project is? Do you think it's writing really efficient code or getting your game to run as fast as possible? Is it a task you do days before release or from the very start? Not sure where to start? Well, this course is for you.
Designed for INTERMEDIATE level Unity and C# students, the content within will forge you into an optimization expert. Without even thinking, you'll be pulling up the Unity profiler and investigating CPU and GPU bottlenecks like a pro. You'll find hints and tips on improving the performance of your game starting with the script and moving onto art assets and finally physics. There are plenty of hands-on exercises designed to give you skills in forensic debugging that will be valuable to you far into the future.
This course uses Unity 2020.2 or 2020.3 but is also compatible with Unity 6.
You will learn about:
Performance Budgets
The Unity Profiler
C# Optimisation Tricks for the Unity API
Art asset optimisation settings
Audio file usage and settings
Tips and tricks for getting more from the Unity Physics system
What people are saying about Penny's courses:
A great and engaging course that teaches you a lot about the Unity Profiler which is key to optimising the games. It is a valuable skill that people look for. It's in a tutorial format which is my preferred method of learning.
Allow me to say how hugely important this is for a person who is interested in certain types of game design. Creating games where you can create AI behaviors that support emergent situations.
I honestly love Holistic's teaching approach and I've never learned so much within a few hours about coding effectively with such detailed explanations!
This course focuses on developing student skills in identifying and solving performance issues in their game development projects. By the end, they will find the use of the Unity Profiler second nature and be able to identify many CPU and GPU bottlenecks in their's and other's Unity projects.

This course, like all of Penny's courses is in the top 1% of 1% (ooh math!) . Everyone likes to give 5 stars, but I rarely, if ever give them. I am a former post secondary instructor myself, so I know hard work and quality when I see it. Penny has a fun, casual and approachable way of teaching that is very rare. I've taken every course she has made and I couldn't recommend them highly enough. Vince

A review from the first half of the course. While it is a great course to take once you got comfortable with the basics of Unity and C#, I noticed a couple of relatively minor issues. For example using ReferenceEquals instead of direct comparison was one of them (TL;DR ReferenceEquals can return false positive in cerain cases when used in Unity). Also, I know the point of this course is not to teach the best practices but I would love if they were mentioned nevertheless.

I am also an experienced Unity developer, I always keep learning from peers to get new ideas, and this video did let me learn optimization much more clearly. But it didn't include some optimization skills such as graphic setting, and image setting, usually, it is more complex in real projects too. but for starting to understand optimization, this is the best video I know.

I think this course is a great opportunity to get into the topic of optimisation. It shows how to use the tool Profiler provided by Unity. For the beginner like me is it really a nice introduction which gives me a lot of information like how to make own performance tests of functions, how to identify bottlenecks in update function in c# script or reducing of GPU draw calls, relation between CPU and GPU time consumption, how v-sync works, level of details (LOD) physics, audio and so on. It's a amazing amount of information and it's presented so easy and understandable. From my point of view it is clearly a recommendation to get it! Like always great work from Penny and thank you for creating and providing such a gem! :)

A good course that confirmed most of the aspects I had already discovered. Missing some topics to go to 5 stars! - complex algorithm like MCTS and garbage collection - build size optimization - URP specific optimization (SRP batcher for instance) - lighting and shadow optimizations Good job Penny anyway! Like all the other courses I attended already

A great and engaging course that teaches you a lot about the Unity Profiler which is key to optimising the games. It is a valuable skill that people look for. It's in a tutorial format which is my preferred method of learning. It does touch a bit on data structures and algorithms and I think it'd be great if it pointed to resources about them for keen students.

It's a great course about optimisation topic. And if you are new unity user and you dont have any optimisation skills or you just want to dive into this topic, then this course really help you. As for me, it's a 5 star course, but I decreased rating to 4.5 because of unattaching valuable links at resources (For example links to H3D community from first section). Yes, it's easy to google it myself, but it more comfortable to get needable info using links at resources. Thanks a lot for that course!

Has a lot of useful information for people new to game development or Unity, but not deep enough for actual developers. A lot of the material could go deeper to actually show why something has a performance improvement. Also the course should be called the Unity guide to optimization. While almost all of these techniques are applicable to other game engines, the course focuses just on Unity. The part about data structures is not great as it does not really explain enough about the data structures or patterns being used. For less experienced people I think this will lead to misunderstandings or problems. For example there is a section on singletons but the instructor never covers why most people actively avoid singletons. They also introduce a lazy singleton but never explain the difference between lazy and non lazy singletons. The course could really benefit from reading up on articles written by game devs who optimized their games and explaining those techniques here. Most of this course is basic knowledge for people already in the game industry. For example, a section on time splicing, calculating something expensive on one frame and using it on the next, partitioning objects to update at different rates for performance would be much more valuable.

My main takeaway from this course is getting a much better handle on the profiler, specifically deep profiling. There are some things I'd like to know more about, like the physics debugger and more about optimizing physics, but that could really just be a matter of distance culling and utilizing some of the tricks I've learned through this course. Ultimately, it is a very good repository of tips and tricks for squeezing better performance out of your games. There were some points of dispute in the comments, specifically in regards best practices when testing whether a thing is null, but this is one of those cases where you can over-optimize and should be taken case-by-case. That said, I wish I had taken this course a year or two ago, and feel a lot more comfortable with the optimization process now that I have finally taken it. As always, Dr. Penny is a great instructor with a passion for teaching, and that never hurts. If you're feeling at all uncomfortable with your knowledge when it comes to the optimal, I can definitely recommend this course. There's a best answer out there, and even if you don't learn it from this course, there's a good chance you'll learn how to get there.

Loved this course! It's not the most fun or exciting topic but this course is an absolute must for people looking to push their Unity dev skills into the intermediate/advanced levels. Been looking for a Unity optimization course for a while now so big thanks to Penny and co. for making it happen and handling it so well!
