iOS 10 & Swift 3: From Beginner to Paid Professional™ (Udemy.com)

The most comprehensive course on iOS development - become a master of app development

Created by: Mark Price

Last updated June 2017

Our take

Based on the ratings of 13,686 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is Devslopes' big iOS bootcamp for Swift 3 and iOS 10, published in 2016 and last updated in June 2017. The syllabus runs 71 hours across 251 lectures and 21 sections: Swift basics, Git, REST calls, Core Data, several Firebase apps including a social network and a Snapchat clone, Sketch design work, four Objective-C sections, App Store submission, and about 13 hours of recorded bootcamp classroom sessions. It is aimed squarely at absolute beginners, and the only stated requirement is a Mac. Around 90,000 students have enrolled and it holds a 4.1 rating from roughly 13,700 reviews.

Students praise the sheer amount of project work and the fact that mistakes are left in, so learners see how errors get fixed. Mark Price gets consistent credit as an engaging, clear teacher. The recurring complaint is that he only teaches part of the course. Several reviewers say the other instructors are knowledgeable but weaker presenters, and a few note that some apps, the Snapchat clone in particular, are left incomplete. Low-star reviews also mention beta software crashing on camera, no solution code for the exercises, and sections that were already dated when Xcode moved on; even a five-star reviewer flags wrong subtitles.

The age is the real issue now. Swift 3 and iOS 10 are long gone, so expect to translate syntax and patch broken APIs as you go. One reviewer who finished it in 2026 says it can be done with help from Google, Stack Overflow and AI, but that is extra work a newer course avoids. The iOS 11 & Swift 4 edition of the same course sits beside it on our list. Buy this one only if it is heavily discounted and you want the volume of Firebase and Objective-C material.

Best forPatient beginners on a Mac who want a huge library of project videos and don't mind translating Swift 3 code to current Swift.
Skip it ifYou want current SwiftUI or Swift 5 syntax, or you expect every lecture to be taught by the headline instructor.

Pros

  • 71 hours and 251 lectures spanning Swift, Firebase, Core Data, Objective-C, Sketch and App Store submission
  • Mistakes are left in the recordings so learners see real errors and how to troubleshoot them
  • Bonus section with about 13 hours of recorded Devslopes bootcamp classroom sessions
  • Mark Price's sections are singled out by reviewers as engaging and clearly explained

Cons

  • Last updated June 2017; Swift 3 and iOS 10 code needs translating to current Swift and Xcode
  • Mark Price teaches only part of the course; reviewers find the other instructors weaker presenters
  • Some apps, notably the Snapchat clone, are incomplete and exercises come without solution code
The course it´s a little outdated but with a littje help of google, stackoverflow and AI the course can be accomplished flawlessy.
Omar Israel Hernandez, a student

Listed as all levels, but the audience list says absolute beginners; experienced Swift developers will find the 2017 content too dated to bother.

iOS Swift Awards Best Paid Course

Welcome to the world's most comprehensive course on iOS development. This course is designed like an in-person coding bootcamp to give you the most amount of content and help with the least amount of cost.

Here are some of the things you'll be able to do after taking this course:

  • Submit apps to the app store
  • Understand programming & basic algorithms
  • Work fluently with Swift 3 & iOS 10
  • Apply to jr iOS development jobs
  • Work as an iOS contractor

If you are absolutely new to programming you should start at the beginning of the course and go to the end.

I've designed this course to take you down a guided learning path. Lectures are not broken out by specific topics. You build apps and then learn a ton of principles within those apps. So don't skip around!

If you already know Swift then you can skip the Swift section since the changes between Swift 2 and Swift 3 are minor.

Swift 3 broke a lot of things in Swift 2. We cover those changes periodically throughout the course so don't worry about watching Swift videos again if you already know Swift.

If you are a student of iOS 9: From Beginner to Paid Professional then feel free to start taking this iOS 10 course.

Keep in mind that this iOS 10 course has a bunch of new apps. So there is a HUGE benefit to ALSO go through the iOS 9 course - or you'll miss out on awesome content.

Don't forget to join the free live community where you can get free help anytime from other students and teacher's aides.

Excellent course! Started with next to no knowledge of coding except a bit of obj-c. Instructors made the videos enjoyable and still conveyed a great amount of detail at the same time, explaining many complex concepts in depth. Thought it was excellent that the instructors did not cut out any errors/mistakes so students can understand what errors can occur and how to troubleshoot them. Only complaint is that during the course some of the subtitles aren't correct. I used the subtitles to pause and write down what instructors were saying so a couple of times I had to rewind a few seconds to hear what they said as subtitles didn't make sense. Looking forward to starting the iOS 11 Course!

The class is Awesome! Mark and the other guys are great teacher... it is not the first time i try to learn how to code an app... and to be honest when i bought this course i was a little skeptical...especially at the beginning when i was listening to the same thing i've listen 100 of times...I have to make amend and admit that this is very well done... many examples (which by the way you will be able to re-use while building your own apps) and very well explained! I definitely do not master swift yet... but it's obvious....it's just a couple of months.. and what i've been able to do after this class.. goes way beyond even my expectations...This i why i bought all the iOS 11 class... i do really like the way these guys let you understand how things are done!!! great job guys! keep it up... so now my half rate less explanation.... nothing major but i have to give you guys two annotation... :) 1) i know it's an iOS 10 class.. but for example the snapchat app it's totally totally different from how swift is now.... it really needs to be updated... i haven't been able to follow that section... 2) this is just for fun... but... Jess... your accent drove me crazy... your British accent is sooooo hard to understand... it took me a while and still i'm missing a lot of what you say... but besides that... great job man! great job you 'all! Thanks! :)

Superb value with hours of in-depth courses along with a bonus Boot Camp sections that's worth the price of the course alone. Problem is....most of the courses are not taught by the entertaining & amazing Mark Price. A large portion of these lessons are taught by guys that clearly never took a teaching class or a public speaking course. They are knowledgeable but the teaching bug hasn't bite these guys yet. If you bought Mark's previous courses be warned...this is still a excellent collection but doesn't feature Mark as much as it should.

I have just completed this course after 3 months of studying with a full time job and busy household. I have been regularly applying what I have learned and I have to say even as a developer of 5 years I learnt a bucket load. I mainly wanted to take the course to learn Swift 3 as I am an Objective C developer who put off learning Swift for so long. I not only have the foundation with Swift down but I learned a tone of extra stuff i.e Firebase and Sketch! I wouldn't hesitate recommending this course to newbies or existing developers! Really good work guys!

A very great course! Mark is teaching in a way, that worked very good for me. It's both very clear and good explanation, but also humor is involved. It is exactly the teaching style that works to me. There are some teachers, who aren't fantastic, but because of the rotation of teachers, it was ok. A thing I didn't like very much, was that many of the projects were made for iOS 9. There are update videos in the beginning of those sections, but it made a confusion. Sometimes I got a feeling, that some of the videos were misplaced. I had to skip some of the sections and come back later. But totally I think it's a very good course that I recommed everyone who wants a solid foundation. I'm excited to make my own apps, and I wanna thank the team at Devslopes for this great course!

This course is helpful but I think it can improve considerably by doing the following: -Give students the opportunity to fill in code (or provide quizzes) during the video. Do something like "before we continue, I'm going to pause the video and have you try to implement this" or something to that effect. -For the projects/exercises at the end of the sections (by the way, I think every section should have these, not just a select few), source code with the solutions should be provided. It's not very helpful to go through an exercise and not have source code to check against. It's like taking an exam but never knowing what you actually scored. -I don't understand why testing (unit testing and UI testing) doesn't have a dedicated section. It's pretty difficult to build an app that's maintainable without tests, so there really should be a section on it. I would also consider discussing continuous integration during a section on tests as this is critical as well. For the price, I think this is a decent course but the above would make this a much more helpful course.

I have now purchased roughly 10 courses on iOS development on Udemy. This group is made up of the best coders and interesting projects the site has to offer. This set of videos will take you further into coding than anything else that is offered on Udemy and it's not even close. If you're serious, you should buy this course. The only drawback is that while they are very talented and the builds are challenging, I wouldn't recommend it as a stand alone to new coders (like myself). Some elements of coding are second nature to Mark and co and you can get lost quickly if you've never coded before. But once you take the training wheels off, Udemy has nothing that is as extensive and supported as this series.

I like the way Mark Price and his team have this class structured. It is very informative and has a ton of great information. Everything you'll learn you will be able to apply to your own apps and not think twice about how to do it. Like other classes who teach you how to build apps but not exactly the purpose as to why they do what they do. Mark informs you of why you things are the way they are so that you understand every part of the process. A great class! Highly recommend!

By Steven Brewis on 9/29/2016

It starts off well, but as you go through the course you start meeting new people who are not instructors IMO and not the people that were introduced at the beginning of the course, why not? Their software is always in beta, and it always crashes (AND THEY MAKE YOU WATCH IT EVERY TIME). Some courses were outdated when Xcode has been updated almost 18 months ago. The one Facebook + Firebase authentication class is so old - it is now absolute and Devslopes knew this because Mark presented another course on Facebook Authentication that was up to date, why make us go through the "60 minute" one at all? Then eventually when you get to "The Real" Mark Price again, its no longer the same Mark Price, this time he looks rushed and almost as if he can't wait to get the video done which is in stark contrast to a lot of the other videos which carry on for almost an hour... Instead of giving us all this Bonus material I would have prefered a more thorough approach on the official course material. I recently purchased Angela Yu's course and I'm finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, everything is a lot clearer, shorter and more consistent. I might consider another course from Devslopes in the future, but only if it is presented by Mark Price (sorry to the other guys), and only if they update the course material regularly. I'm sorry that I have to give such a bad review, I really wanted to enjoy this course and in some ways I have - which is why I gave 2 stars ;)

By Beau Galbraith on 9/12/2016

You can't go wrong with this one. It is as good as any other iOS tutorials and even slightly better in my opinion. The one thing devslopes does that others don't do is provide the best practices. Other tutorials do show you how to accomplish things on your own but devslopes shows you how a potential employer would expect you to do it, which does make a difference in the long run. I do like that there are multiple instructors, however, I don't enjoy them all equally. Inevitably some are better than others. Therefore not completely 5 stars but probably your best investment for learning to develop apps with swift. -Beau
