Course Description

In this course intended for intermediate viewers, instructor Alan Thorn explores how to build low-poly environment assets in a dark industrial theme. These meshes fit together seamlessly, like building blocks, for creating expansive and versatile level design in games. Use Blender to model, unwrap, texture-paint, and optimize assets, exporting them to a real-time game engine. Over five, massive chapters you’ll examine:

1). Polygonal modelling techniques for building complex shapes and designs

2). NGons and topology optimization for enhancing and refining your meshes

3). Smooth shading and UV Seams for creating good looking meshes and texture designs

4). Texture unwrapping and UV layouts, as well as texture baking and painting for developing a smooth and intuitive workflow

5). Model exporting for game engines, to help bring your models to life inside a real-time game engine

By the end of this course, you’ll have a solid foundation for easily building low-poly, modular game assets that can be used and re-used to create potentially limitless level designs.

For intermediate users, but goes over basics like someone who's never used Blender before. Spends nearly the first hour setting up things that are personal preference and have no bearing on the project. Also had no idea the course was so old and thus using a largely outdated version of the software. Thankfully, the concepts are easy enough to implement into my current workflow

This course is pretty useful, even in 2020. Decided to give it a shot as based on the preview it could be seen it showed actual industry-standard workflow and it was correct. Instructor is indeed a professional, but more than that knows how to transmit the knowledge which I appreciate a lot. I'm giving this course 4 stars as the content is really a gold mine, however it hasn't aged 100% well compared to how blender has evolved, either get blender 2.7 to follow completely or skip the baking processes portion (Ambient Occlusion, diffuse map, bump map) if using blender 2.8... anyways still an awesome course in 2020

Great course. Not only learnt some new features I did not know yet, but especially learnt a lot of a possible workflow which can be used. Teaching was clear and good speed.

It looks like there are few mistakes or missing sections in this course or some videos are not in depth enough. Like there is a chapter with Photoshop in the title but I haven't seen any use of Photoshop or the materials configuration in Unity (section 5) is only a 3 min videos not including all the texture files exported from Blender... The course is probably not up to date with the latest version of Blender and Unity

Good explanations of modular game asset creation using Blender. Succinct and to the point lectures that do not drone on about irrelevant issues. However, I would advise to watch all the lectures in a given Section before attempting to implement the concepts, as some things, such as the process of saving a texture image is explained in later lectures. Overall, I am very happy with the course and the instructor's ability to make new concepts easy to understand.

Very clear and easy to follow for me. I could wish for Blender style key commands instead of Maya, but Maya is more the industry standard tool.

This course gave me a good overall understanding of what's involved in creating an original 3d game level and I now have a list of topics I want to explore further. I also found it well structured, presented and paced. The only downside for me was the complexity of geometry and number of modular pieces. I ended up simplifying it to focus on learning new things and avoid spending too much time on debugging and repetitive tasks.

The perfomance of the content vs cost of the course is far better than loose time searching for free tutorials o documentation with guys what you can see they know nothing about performance or pipeline blender - unity.

By Luis Gutierrez on 1/28/2017

This is a great course you'll love it. But whatever you do, if you learned blender using the blender default controllers, do not listen to the instructor and change to maya control style. I did that and now I'm having so much problems with blender. I tired to change back to factory settings and it's still giving me issues. Other than that, this course is pretty freaking amazing. There should also be a course about making a building for games like first person shooters.

Really commited teacher, I am happy so far with what I'm learning (still at the beginning of the course). I will change my review as I advance through the course, but loving it at the moment. Competitive price, and clear explanations. I'm just hoping to see how all this Blender stuff integrates with Unity in the most performance-friendly way.
