Course Description

If you’re interested in learning how to make your own third person action combat game, similar to Dark Souls or Assassin’s Creed, then this is the course for you!

Using Unity 2022.1, you'll learn how to create your own 3rd person combat system (similar to that used in games like Dark Souls or Assassin’s Creed). It can easily be added to your RPG project, or any other 3rd person game you’re working on.

You’ll learn about player input, animation state machines, attack combos, dodging, target locking, cinemachine camera options, simple enemy attack AI and more.

By the end of the course you’ll have created your very own sandbox arena where you can hack and slash as many enemies as you like, using a 3rd person camera and control system - with either mouse / keyboard or game controller.

This course is aimed at a beginner plus to intermediate level. You'll need a basic understanding of the Unity interface and C# (if you've taken any of our other Unity courses then you should be good to go).

All students have access to the Q&A forums where our Instructors, Teaching Assistants and Community are ready to help answer your questions and cheer on your success.

Great course. It is a high level overview and does not go in depth about every topic. But the instructor does a good job of giving a quick and useful explanation of almost everything in the course. The instructor speaks very clear and deliberate. It almost never feels like a lesson is dragging on forever. The challenge in each lesson showed me that I'm understanding the concepts and that motivated me to continue the course till the end. Thank you for sharing this knowledge. I can't think of a better starting point for making third person games.

The best showcase of the State Machines I've seen! As a beginner, I was struggling with this concept for half a year. Nathan managed to explain its design and implementation in a way that simply clicked for me. The way the course is structured inspires to expand and experiment with your project, especially if you take on the challenges. Thanks a lot GameDevTV, It's been a great journey with you guys so far.

I have taken a number of Unity courses both here on Unity and over at GameDev.TV. I've enjoyed most of them and have learned may valuable things. Of all the courses taken, this course stands out as the best without doubt. The tutor paces his lessons very well, and gives enough information about what he is doing so that it is easy to follow the logic and is also sufficient for when going to the Unity documentation to increase the depth of one's understanding. The icing on the cake is that the state machine constructed here is extensible without any great headaches and all the content of the lessons work perfectly. I used Polygon Dungeons and Fantasy Kingdom for my environment, player and enemy characters and the result is a fully functioning player and enemies and this is a great springboard for developing the rest of my game. I cannot compliment this course highly enough.

Let me tell you something, this is the best course on the whole web regarding using state machine in such simple words. Let me tell you an experience, I tried to learn State Machine usage from a youtube video (you can search the genshin series), that series did so bad trauma on me that I stopped making games for 6 months. Simple mention of state machine scared the hell out of me. I made a whole game based on animator statemachine just to avoid the same trauma. But then I saw this course and trauma went away. I changed my whole project to follow this Statemachine style. In the end what I will say it that take this course and you will not regret it. It does get bit complex on the 61-63 but that very very very minor inconvenience. My only complaint is that I wish they also included the 3rd person bow aiming as well as enemy bow aiming, although I have made it myself in my project but I am sure if they had included it, their way would have been much much better than mine and I would have gotten a chance to learn a more efficient way.

I actually liked it a lot. It was a very fluid and fun lesson. Our teacher Nathan also explained everything in a very understandable way. Gamedev.tv is my favorite channel. The course was so good that I even decided to start the multiplayer course from our teacher Nathan next week. I guess it had to do with my expectation that I would learn something new in C#. I think you are doing your job very well, so thank you very much.

The course is very detailed and teaches core concepts of state machines and provides a good structured foundation for making a bigger game. Although the climb section kindof seemed like a last minute addition and the jump can be improved a lot, but overall the state machine system is structured in such a way that any other mechanic can be easily added without making the code a mess. Overall very good

I had a lot of help from my brian teaching assistant. I was annoyed by spelling mistakes and changes not reflected in player prefabs. He contacted me right away and he helped me. Other than GameDev.tv, they don't even contact you when you ask a question. Also, the course is very easy to understand. The C#script code was neat and tidy, which was nice. It turns out that it is easy to make if you understand the state machine. It was very nice to be able to animate without connecting animator nodes. I also wanted to know how to add animation outside of Mixamo.

Great course, a bunch useful tools and just what I needed. I does feel a bit lacking when comparing it to your previous courses but just because the previous RPG courses were excellent, 10 out of 10 in my opinion, a lot more in depth with focus on the gameplay experience. I'm giving this one 4.5 out of 5 but hopefully once additional features get added I can change it to 5/5, like blocked attacks reactions, character collider adjustments and scaling when jumping or crouching, idle falling state for longer falling distances, lateral character movement when hanging, stamina system, climbing ladders and movement while blocking, crouching through small tunnels, range combat with aiming come to mind. That would make the course exceptional in my opinion, but still a great work really glad I bought it, keep it going and thanks a lot.

Great course! i Have completed this now and i am using the code as a basis to extend and make my own game. The tutor explains the content well, and the teaching assistants are really knowledgable, respond quickly and give great advice. The only thing i would say if you are starting the course is that the coding is one the more challenging side of intermediate, but stick with it - once you get a few lessons into the course and start using the state machine code in context, it all starts to make a lot more sense.

I managed to learn a lot about Unity, so overall the course is useful. I recommend it if you want to learn about implementing 3rd person combat in Unity, we even get some extra bells and whistles like targeting camera and combo attacks and whatnot. I am definitely happy that I bought this course and went through it, I would buy it again. The coding part is a bit annoying, it is definitely not clean code (I understand that this is not the goal of this course). There are a lot of examples where the presenter just goes ahead and says that 'and we need a new method here so let's just write this and that' and explains the reasoning _later_ so you don't have a chance to figure it out by yourself. Personally I would have preferred to get to the fun part a bit earlier - implement a single attack and dealing damage to the enemy, without all the camera and combo attack situations; and you could add all the extra features on the top of the basic game mechanic. That would also be a possibility to demonstrate how to write extendable code.
