I've completed the course, omitting some of the repeating stuff in the end. The technique is actually quite simple. I'd say this course is perfect for a person who have figured out the low-poly modeling and can model simple shapes with flat colors. The technique of this course, I think, would be THE next step if you want to learn gradually and are at that step of primitive flat-colored low-poly. I think a total newbie would manage this course as well. But would have to learn some more basic things as well (which are covered too). I want to mention that there's a downside to this style of texturing, as I've figured while going through the course. It has a fixed lighting. You'll have to modify slightly the technique that's being given here, to be able to make some hybrid style that will look good with dynamic lighting. It's a great foundation though. Before that course, I would be ashamed of my models because they looked too simple to be considered something more than a practice piece. But with this course, I've actually managed to model a thing that looks PROFESSIONAL! And this is priceless. I think this course is perfect for making renders that would go to into a 2D game, and also for 3d models in a static lighting scene, such as mobile strategy games. This is THE technique for these two purposes. Also, this way of modeling is quite artistic. I was learning to draw a couple of years ago, and the skills I've learned back then came quite handy (although they're not required). Love Grant's way of teaching. You feel easy while learning, and he's quite professional both as an artist and a teacher. While going through the course, he's going to a lot of ways to do things, that you may need while making such models. I'm feeling pretty confident in my ability to do such models after the course. And thanks to Rick for the help, making Grant notice some difficulties that may arise in a person unfamiliar with the tools. It helped! I recommend this course for beginners and for people who can navigate in Blender and make primitive models but don't know where to go from that.

The flow of this course felt a bit more casual and less structured then the usual courses offered by GameDevTV... For me, this approached worked really well. I flowed through this course at a pace I was very proud of. I am completing it with basic understanding of Blender modeling & animation after doing a several Blender courses. Each course I take for Blender has felt like an unraveling of an onion. The power of Blender just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Texture Painting is a whole new way of using Blender and I love it. I've learned so much and in turn unlocked so much more for my future projects. Thank you Grant & GameDevTV ✌️ TLDR, Take this course. It's zen and you'll learn lots and maybe even reconnect with a creative outlet you never knew you needed.

Grant has a fountain of knowledge when it comes to using Blender! All the tips of common mistakes or issues newbies like me run into were covered in this course and gives me a way to better understand how artists create textures from start to finish. Having Rick follow along helped out a ton as I had similar questions he also had when going through the process. Bonus points for adding in changes that Blender 4 had for the shortcuts like the color picker shortcut key being Shift + x rather than the old way of doing it. The challenging bit of texture painting when following along for the first time is getting the brush radius and strength values to roughly match what Grant had as I followed along. Recommend this course for anyone that wants to know what its like to 3d model up to creating the textures for their own projects

Amazing course by Grant and nice accompaniment by Rick! Helped me a lot understanding texture painting in blender. This is the second course I complete in Udemy, and both are from Grant Abbit. As these are short courses, these are perfect for beginners I believe. The only gripe is that, because of some blender updates, some parts are bit confusing because the short keys or placement of buttons (positions) in blender have changed recently, and the team needs to update it. Example: New short key for color sampling is Shift + X. I learned modelling through Youtube tutorials, and I wanted to find out what extra I can get from paid courses. Now I understand that paid courses are designed better than a Youtube course. I suggest any beginner to go for GameDev.tv short courses first before getting into any large courses, as they will help you with the basics. Thank you guys!!!

A great course for anyone who wants to learn the great handpainted art workflow used in games such as World of Warcraft. Also a great tutorial for anyone who doesn't feel like paying for Substance Painter or Photoshop. The entire game asset pipeline inside Blender was my dream. Having to change between different software constantly is a big pain and this course has finally helped me make the switch. While Blender may not be the top choice for making PBR textures, it works perfectly for the handpainted style! Grant shares some very useful tips and tricks, making sure the texture painting process is pain-free. The entire workflow is quite intuitive and beginner friendly. Rick has been a great addition to this structure. A student figure sitting beside the teacher asking the questions many of us are having is very helpful. He also acts as a motivation showing off his first-timer work, making you feel better about your painting :D Overall an amazing experience. Keeping it short and digestible was a great choice - it ended up being one of the few courses I actually finished all the way through

I'm a teacher and instructional coach with ten years of experience teaching systematic reading skills to kids who can't read. So bear that in mind with what I write below; from a teacher, whose job is coaching teachers, reviewing these teachers. These guys are great. Their learner/teacher relationship is the first time I've seen that on a Udemy course, and it is a feature, not a bug. Having Rick there to ask questions is a little distracting at first, because it slows down the initial progress--but it also keeps Grant very focused. Grant's typical pacing is great, with lots of quiet time to process what he's explained through demonstration, but Rick's punctual questions ground the course and help neutralize the typical frustration with doing something as complicated as what they're showing off. Three weeks ago, I could do basic modeling, but could not even access the texture painting panel. Now I've got a small assembly of items for an animation I'm making, their share the same approximate texel density, look like they were made by the same person or exist in the same world, and give me a sense of pride in what has been a slow, sometimes painful learning process. I do wish there was an alternative to this short, project-based course focusing on a character, but I get what they're going for and fully support this type of course. Short, very focused, and student-centered. Grant and Gamedev.tv are on my next-to-purchase-list once I've got a few more microprojects down. I have a feeling I can learn a lot from these guys.

---- :-) The course for me is very good because texture painting was explained very well. It is very good that the course has been completed with information for Blender version 4, because there is a different window layout and a different organisation of material settings. I had a problem with this before, which I solved quite uncertainly. In this course I received confirmation. My Blender 4.0.1 doesn't want to paint textures on planes. So I changed the course a bit and set up the cubes with the back wall removed, on which it was possible to paint with textures. Thank you for a good course.

Grant Abbitt is the Best. 5 stars. [update} Amazing techniques in painting. Really surprised that Rick Davidson is the Lead instructor for Blender for Beginners, a course of GameDev.tv, but he keeps interrupting the videos with questions about how to split a window and questions like... oui oui oi wasn't listening but whot wey you doing they ye ggnn..hh ?? Is it some kinda passive aggression because with every interruption he turns his head to the side and smiles at someone as if to impress them ( a young beautiful intern on the couch outside bounds of the camera perhaps ? ) ya never know. For some of us who are used to pure blender bliss from Grant, these interruptions are just annoying. The First One Star down by the time I reached the middle of the Course. because of the disruptions during the course by "A Leading Industrial 3D Veteran". All we students watching the show could do was to re-curse the tutorials and pray to God Rick won't do it again (No pun intended). [update] Thanks to our prayers, Rick's questions get useful after the middle of the course. [Update] Some of the techniques like painting Metal & convincing materials in the course are truly Amazing. But that happens only after the middle of the course. So rating raised back to 4.5 plus Rick is less disruptive after the middle of the course. Thank you O God for making Rick into a Good Lamb. And thank you for Listening Sharon. You are an Angel.

Grant is a very good teacher and his explanations are sweet. My real complaint about this particular course is about Rick. Look, I know you guys had the best interest of the students in mind when putting someone to ask student like questions, but it just didnt work as intended. Rick's questions just crashes all the workflow and interrupts Grant, the course could be much faster without Rick's participation. We are in the 21th century and it is a great necessity to be able to learn skills as fast as we can, but this dynamic you guys tried to implement totally breaks that. Im sure Rick might be a good guys and a great professional, but this course could be greater without all those interruptions. Update: Im a Rick hater now.
