Course Description

Ever wanted to make your very own multiplayer games? The free Unity Game Engine is making the process easier than it has been with its Netcode For GameObjects (NGO) framework.

In this course we'll create a multiplayer top-down shooter that you can modify and turn into your own fun creation and play against 20 or more people simultaneously online. In the process you'll learn how to create and deploy a dedicated server with matchmaking.

We’ll be making a .io style game (like slither .io and agar .io), that can accommodate dozens of players. Through that process you’ll build the skills to make your own competitive or cooperative multiplayer game in any genre that interests you.

You’ll learn about networking and how to make the game a multiplayer. You’ll start building the core gameplay, making your tanks move, shoot, collect coins etc. Later you’ll add polish and more advanced features like leaderboards, mini maps and bounties.

You’ll take your game online using UGS (Unity Gaming Services) so players can connect over the internet without the need to port forward.

Finally you’ll learn how to make your game deployable as a dedicated server, so none of the players have to host the game. And you’ll learn to integrate matchmaking, so players can queue up, be matched together and a server spun up for them to play on.

You’ll get full lifetime access for a single one-off fee. The creators are qualified and experienced with modelling and coding, so are able to explain complex concepts clearly, as well as entertain along the way.

All students have access to the Q&A where our Instructors, Teaching Assistants and Community are ready to help answer your questions and cheer on your success.

Jump in and start creating your own multiplayer game now. You’ll be playing it with your friends in no time!

Good lessons overall, the coding and the use of unity is explained on a beginner level. Pacing is good, building up everything as we go. IMO the actual networking part could have been explained better, like why we create server and client side projectiles but players just exist as one prefab. Also i'm not a fan of using scriptable objects as input readers, they are intended to be data containers, a singleton or partially static class would have been better, because OnEnable is called several times on scriptable objects in the editor so it can cause a memory leak and unexpected behaviour (though it's only called once in a build so not a major issue).

Here is some constructive feedback about the course: - At the beginning of section 1, in the video Set up Unity & VS Code you ask to download Unity version 2022.2.7f1 and use template 3D, but in the project itself you then change it to Unity version 2022.2.6f1 & template 2D (URP.) In the future, please avoid this contradiction. - The Unity version used in the tutorial is quite old (2022 version). I would hope that in the future this tutorial could be updated to Unity 6. All in all, a very informative course, and I got a working game as the end result. In the future, I hope to be able to develop something great based on the lessons learned in this course. :)

Ok, just finished this course using Unity 6(specifically 6000.0.47f1). First off, big fan of GameDev.tv and their courses, I think this is my 4th one(and I have another I will get to at some point). Overall, I think the course did what was advertised. I learned the very basics of multiplayer networking and have a better idea how the development workflow would go. I did have couple notes about the course tho: 1. Since I used a new version of the unity editor than the course, there were some points with different code(to be expected), most of these were addressed pretty well. However, once we started getting into building for the server and uploading that, a lot of the code was different. I ended up scouring through the forums and found a few posts of some people who got it working. The main issue was the server build and the windows build had code that were ok in one but not the other. I think adding some sort of heads up before that build section with a bonus lecture or code to fix that consistently would be very helpful. Since most of the rest of the course depends on getting that to work. 2. As mentioned before, I have taken a few other GameDev.Tv courses, I am a big fan. One thing that was a little different on this course was the challenges seemed more like busy work than challenges. Most of the time, we would have a script almost identical to the challenge script to reference. I understand the need to make it simple for beginners(like me), but I found that is is typically better to be equipped with the theory(like the types of calls and maybe documentation), then actually try and go do the challenge. This lets you think through the challenge, solve it your own way(or not), and either way look at how the instructor solves it to either improve or change your workflow. 3. I know this is not a networking class, but as someone who is new to this world, I would have loved to get into some of the details about how it works. I know this class was focused on UGS/NGO, which is great, I think I have a good understanding. I would have also liked to have some background details on how some of this stuff was working. That would help build a solid foundation so that it didn't just feel like I was copying calls specifically for UGS/NGO down, in case I wanted to look into using other options. Anyway, those are my thoughts on improving the course. But there was a lot of good to, Nathan did great(as always) and for the most part explained the reasoning behind the code and syntax he was doing. It gave me a good foundation to jump off of. I do want to get into the details of multiplayer development, so if you all have any further resources I would be very interested in hearing about them.

Actual i continue with my MMO game and use this course again. I have now more experience in Unity and understand things better. This course is excellent and give me the know how what i was searching for. I increase my evaluation from 4.5 upto 5.0 stars. Thank you very much to you that you create this course. Well done. My evaluation 9Months Ago: 4.5 stars. I like the course. It gives me a lot of information how to implement a MMO Game.

Another great course from Gamedev.tv. I took the course because I needed exposure to multiplayer frameworks, and this is an excellent course for this. The one unexpected thing I learned is that the UGS servers are balky and unreliable. That part of the course, through no fault of Gamedev.tv, was not fun. I do want to end by discussing the excellent course content here. The course work is broken up into digestible chunks, the instructor is engaging, and the challenges are appropriate.

Really good course that tells you the fundamentals of Multiplayer in Unity. Great instructor, tho I would argue that you need a solid understanding of Unity and C#. The first lessons are fairly easy and good designed for beginners; but as the course continues you need to be able to follow along, its getting a bit more complex ;)! But why dont you give it a try, this is def. the best unity beginner multiplayer course out there for that price. EDIT: One minor thing, but thats very specific and up to me: I think for the complexity of the course the challenges should be a bit tougher ;)! I started creating my own challenges and that def. works, but in the end thats just personal preference :D! Additionally the support is the greates here @GameDevTV

Nathan/Dapper Dino's best course yet (by far!). Well done! The community needed another NGO course, so thank you! One place this course really excels is in explaining how to create the lobbies for joining players using the NGO framework, in this regard it's the clearest explanation out there. I'm currently at lecture 32, half through Ch 3 so far, and looking forward to finishing the course. Already very happy I got the course as it complements and fills in gaps/recovers topics in easy-to-understand ways that the other (very few) NGO courses out there, e.g. Code Monkey's 16-hour detailed course, and the 2-hour video from Samyam. It also has nuggets the other courses don't have, so if you're starting off with NGO and making a multiplayer game, it's just a very helpful learning tool to have.

I've used gamedev.tv for several Udemy courses. I love the instructions methods, the challenges, and most of all the new content they put out. I'm able to learn at my own pace and revisit lectures as needed. The methods they teach are easy to follow and readable. 10/10 content 10/10 response time As a full time bartender who dreams of designing games, I can say with certainty I would be completely lost without them.

By Carl Kidwell on 7/31/2023

Overall a competent course in which the source code works and the instructions are clear, at a reasonable pace. Giving this a high rating for the reason than the complexity of multiplayer code and a working solution demonstrated. That being said the style of this course is largely the typical "type along with the instructor" style course meaning its not a very strong curriculum focus on 'teaching' and you can easily find yourself at the end having not really learned a lot of the UGS (Unity Game Systems) because most of you did was copy what the instructor did. Knowing this ahead of time you can take personal efforts to go above and beyond to help your learning/retention. Take notes as you go, try to mutate/change the assignments, read the Unity documentation etc. In summary my thoughts are that this is a good launching point of learning UGS - not an end point.

This was Dino Dapper's best course and he deserves a big congratulations!!!! I am very satisfied with the quality of the course, the pace of implementation was good, and the multiplayer never lost focus on the gameplay and vice versa. It was an excellent course in every way and showed me all the points I needed to start creating projects on my own and without having to seek knowledge from other sources.
