Highly recommand this course, especially if you're interested in 2D game dev! I personally learned a ton of things in this only 10-hour course. It's really concise and elegant, Stephen just compressed all the essentials in these 5-15 mins lessons. The allocation for each part in this course is super reasonable and covered a lot (input, scene management, VFX, coding, etc.). All parts are good and the VFX part is the best. My only complain is that the code is getting a bit messy at the end (naming, code section order, function splitting, etc.). Moreover, as a non-native english speaker, I also learned lots of new words like "handy dandy", "fancy schmancy", etc. and enjoyed them. Anyway, really appreciate for presenting this course to us, Stephen! If you have any new courses in the future, I'll definitely take them.

I really love the creator's style, dialogue, humor, and in-depth level of programming knowledge. I got a LOT out of this course, and I feel like I'm beginning to get a firmer grasp on more advanced topics like interfaces, inheritance, scriptable objects, singleton patterns, animations/animation events, camera controllers, scene transitions, materials and shader graphs, and so much more. What I found super helpful in this course is keeping a Microsoft Word document "diary" where I would take notes on complex topics that Stephen was explaining, and I would literally copy and paste code from VS studio into the diary document. Later, when I'm working on my own game, I can easily ctrl + F search complicated topics like "mouse follow" or "how to set up a custom cursor", etc... The one thing I believe that the creator could enhance in this course is his explanations of what he's doing while he's coding. I noticed that he explains a lot of advanced topics, but he does so pretty quickly, and even after rewatching several times, I would have to research things on my own to obtain a robust understanding of what is going on. I think it would be helpful to talk more about things like day-to-day examples of how interfaces are useful, or why enums are useful, or why a certain line of code is superior to another, or why he's choosing to make a certain method in a certain script as opposed to another script, or why make a property vs a private variable. This would inherently make the course significantly longer, so I can understand his need to keep the videos short and to the point, so I suppose this might just be my personal preference! Overall, I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this course, I grew a lot from it, and I would sincerely recommend it to any beginner+ game developer out there. Thank you Stephen!

This course has a lot of cool stuff in it and is worth taking. I think its particularly good for practice. That said, I do have some issues with it. The editing needs to be fixed. There are too many time compressing cuts that result in having to constantly pause and rewind. This is one of the only courses I can't increase the speed on. Also, if unity is compiling or something else is loading, put that in the video too since my computer is also doing the same. There are also around 10 singletons used througout the code base. That seems like a lot when the community advises against them. Lastly, the last two sections feel a bit more rushed than the first sections.

excellent tutorial. The Pacing is really good, instructor is engaging... its just really good in general. The lessons are all right around 5-15 minutes, so you are never worried about having the time to finish one. He likes to show a lot of solutions to a problem but most of the solutions are not really very scalable or are pretty bug prone. That is completely forgivable considering this is a "beginner+" course (though maybe no one should even teach string references... they are just the worst). The ONLY reason I didn't give it 5 stars is it should have tried to introduce a design pattern to show a proper solution. The two that come to mind most easily would have been Object Pooling for the bullets( you would need this if you continued with this project), or the observer pattern for the UI/Animation system. Either would have been very easy to implement here and would really help people transition from beginner to intermediate game design.

The overall course is as i had expected it. But be carefull - if you have no programing knowledge or want pretty in depth explanations, this course is maybe not for you. Also, the teacher goes through different things very quickly in a row, like doing somethin in unity, then hopping through 3-4 classes and do stuff all in 2-3 minutes at certain points. While i have no problems with that, there for sure will be people who struggle with that. As the sound is really unpleasant when slowing the speed down, i think people should consider that before enrolling in the course. But beside that, i am really happy with anything and glad that i took it! :)

It is a nice course. I've learnt a lot. I especially like the bullet hell section, because it gave me a lot of tools to expand my game with different types of monsters and attack patterns. That being said, I will take a star off because I think the course focus a bit too much on visual. Making the game looks nice should be put into another course, or be served as a bonus at the end. Instead, I would prefer to replace the sections about visuals with more RPG combat related lectures. For instance, I am a bit disappointed that the course skims over enemy AIs. I would gladly trade away the sections on visuals to learn about how to code more complex enemy AI behaviors, such as chasing the player, pathfinding, context steering, etc. Even an entire section on making a boss enemy would have been nice. After all, this is a combat related course.

I enjoyed this course, I liked how it looked when purchased it, really my only bad thing to say is that there isn't more of it. I want to continue building this game but I'm unsure of where to go next on my development journey. I definitely learned a lot of skills in this course but I also learned there are many ways to do a thing in development. Also it doesn't matter if its not perfect, getting it working is just fine. I still have a lot to learn and I guess the best way to do that is write more code and try out different things. thanks a lot.

Excellent course! I already did a few courses on GameDev.tv and this one allowed me to refresh a lot of things, and also learn new ways to do them. Stephen was great! And he went straight to the point and didn't waste time. The only bad things to add are: - It could have been great to have a bit more explanation about what he was going to do in each lesson, and why. When he said, "I'm gonna add this and do that".. I always end up thinking "ok great, but why?". Of course, the answer is: he already tested and this is the way to go. But well, sometimes following the train of thoughts could add a lot. - Some sections are a biiiit hard to follow and understand. And I came from a 10+ years of development.

Overall, this course contained a lot of useful content and new information that will greatly help me with my hobby projects. As someone who has been a web developer for many years and has been programming for 20 years, I appreciated the high speed of the course, even though I had to hit the "pause" button at many points. Code-along was not possible for me, so less experienced programmers may find it daunting. I particularly enjoyed the concepts covered in the course, such as Lerp, AnimationCurves, and the whole BulletHell section. The course also gave me a better understanding of Tilemaps. The introduction of newer Unity features like the new Controls and Cinemachine make the course very strong, as many things are now much easier than a few years ago. However, as someone who has also worked through the 3D RPG series on Udemy and liked the structure presented there, I found some coding topics in this course, such as Scriptable Objects and the structure of the scripts related to the IEnemy interface, Projectile, Shooter and EnemyAI, to be confusing and unintuitive. The scripts (Enemy Type) sometimes depend on each other in both directions, making the workflow appear somewhat disorganized. There is a tendency to simply code quickly without questioning what we are actually doing, although I was able to solve all the coding challenges easily, but I am not the standard due to my experience. I am only deducting one star because I really got a lot of new inspiration from this course, and the course is definitely worth the money when viewed in isolation. However, I will need to review some of the scripts from the other courses to ultimately achieve a better overall workflow, especially for 2D RPGs.

I am absolutely thrilled with the beginner Unity 2D game development course I found on Udemy! As a complete newcomer to the world of game development, I was a bit apprehensive about diving in, but the course is incredibly well-structured and easy to follow. The instructor does an excellent job of breaking down complex concepts into manageable steps, and the hands-on projects are the perfect way to practice and cement my newfound knowledge. I particularly appreciate the balance between theory and application in the course, as it has given me a strong foundation for creating my own games. Overall, I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in game development, regardless of their prior experience. Thanks to this course, I am now well on my way to developing my own game, and I couldn't be more excited about the journey ahead!
