Course Description

In this game design course, I'll be guiding you step by step through the creation of a side scrolling platformer game (akin to the classic "Mario" games) using Unreal Engine:  THE premier free to download gaming engine!  (AND the SAME engine used to build the smash hit "Fortnite.")

This course contains over 100+ fun to follow video lessons (follow along in sequence).  Things learned in this course include:

  • How to setup and create a project in Unreal Engine

  • How to construct a 2D level using 3D objects

  • How to setup a side scrolling camera

  • How to setup a character's movement mechanics

  • How to create interactive objects using Blueprint Scripting

  • How to create powerups and special player abilities

  • How to implement simple enemy AI

  • How to create a checkpoint system

  • How to respawn a player

  • How to create a working HUD

  • How to create interactive menus

  • How to create a dynamic way of implementing "Level Settings" (making things like customizing music and time limits per level a cinch!)

  • How to architecture a gaming project inside Unreal's Project Settings

With the knowledge gained in these video lessons, you will be armed with the necessary skills to start building your OWN gaming creations (WITHOUT any programming knowledge needed!)

When finished with the course, please send me photos or videos of what YOU have been able to build and I'll share them with the community in future emails.

This was an interesting and helpful journey into the platformer game genre. There have been very interesting mechanics, that I learned throughout the course and is generally good and fun to follow. There are a few flaws and mistakes in the scripting and are also prone to errors when you want to change things. Hence it's not universal and best practice scripting. And Mario is missing. That's not really important, but a main concept of creating such games, a moveable and working character, is completely skipped. In general the course feels a little unfinished and disorganized. Basically a recommendation, but we should see this course more as an excursion than an educational course.

Course is extremely well put and the professor is always beyond well explaining everything well. I found out that this is meant for beginners and as someone who is Advanced I caught myself still learning new things from this course. The only thing I would have to say is that because this course is fairly old, the professor still answer questions, and updates his courses so if you have a question, its most likely been answered by him or another student. Now he can get repetitive but other than that i have no regrets purchasing this course.

There are a lot of UE5 courses out there, but this one is by far the most well made, solidly taught course I've taken so far, with clear explanations for every step and consistent callbacks to older lessons, allowing for easy understanding of information in every video. It covers virtually everything one might need to build a game in UE5 including oft-glossed over parts like level dressing, transitions, widget blueprints and it even touches on Blueprint Interfaces. While the course doesn't cover much in the way of customizing one's own character for a game, this one feels like it answers just about all the other questions a beginner might have. This course made me feel a lot more confident in my understanding of Unreal Engine 5 than others.

Best Instructor ever, very likable guy. If I would ever take a real-life course, thats the instructor I'd wish to have. He goes at exactly the right pace for beginners, but also doesn't go too slow, he gives a detailed summary at the end of each section, and even often jumps back to previous sections of the course to explain how the current section integrates into the entire project. Simply an immensely helpful course, I learned so much. You can feel that he doesn't just go through the motions as quickly as possible (I've watched courses like that), he wants you to understand. Absolutely worth the money, and more.

Mr. Wondra is simply the best. I've taken several of his courses now and he is unmatched when comes to clearly articulating what he is doing and why. He makes special effort to show alternative ways of doing things and trying to illustrate how different elements of the blueprints work together. This course in particular is excellent for beginners interested in learning unreal engine because it's concepts are immediately familiar and implementing them is both relatively straightforward and rewarding. All the blueprints are specifically designed to be flexible and highly customizable. The organization of the course, the clarity of the information presented, the thoroughness, and the generally pleasant professionalism is top notch. Strongly recommend to anyone interested in getting started with Unreal Engine 5.

I've completed officially accredited courses in Unreal, and a couple of Udemy type courses as refreshers. I found this one really great, some things became a lot clearer to me. Not everything is fully explained but you learn enough to make a simple platformer. It nearly got a 5 star review. and then... right near the end of the course the code starts throwing an error, I spent a long time going back over videos to no avail, I finally found in the Q&A some one asking about it, but then it was just passed off and Greg said 'Long story short, this is just a nuisance that doesn't ultimately have any impact....' and it might not, but when we are learning, its these bug fixes that really make a difference and I think to say that while teaching a course is a little sloppy. I will do another course by Greg? Sure, no worries at all. He made some things click better than others. I knew I would get asked why my score was my score so I thought give the answer now. Cheers!

Great teacher! He explains everything very clearly and doesn't skip anything. It's great to follow (listen) to all the steps and at the same time implement them in your own game. No 5 stars at this moment, there is 1 last thing that's not fully working for me. Greg is helping me to fix it! It's mostlikey a user error but I can't seem to find the problem. I might need to redo a whole portion of the training. If I do find the problem and can fix it, I will make this a 5 star review!

Greg Wondra is a really good instructor and I would recommend him and his courses to anyone who wants to learn Blueprints within the context of the Mario game. Unfortunately, the game mechanics is very, very old and therefore dated and even though a lot of what was taught still applies, I thought the content adhered too much to the Mario game and not enough for someone like me who was more interested in making a indie platformer game because, obviousely, we can't actually make a Mario game for release. In order to make my own personal platformer game I really needed solutions that provided answers for my own indie game release. I felt this course could have been more about all the in's and out's of creating a full platformer like a section entirely about characters and a section about weapons or ai or organic level pathing, etc. So, even though I greatly appreciated this course, I would say I got about 50-60 percent of what I needed.

Greg is one of the best Unreal Engine instructors I've came across so far. He absolutely makes everything seem simple and makes everything he does make sense. He doesn't just throw in the nodes and link them up, he explains what every node does, how its working in the game and certainly makes you wrap your head around every bit of logic in the game. Greg has really helped me become more aware of how things work in game development. Thank you!!

This is a great introduction for learning how to construct a side scrolling platform game using UnReal Engine using the Blueprint system. The course is delivered in nice, bite-sized chunks so doesn't overwhelm the newcomer at each stage and provides a useful reference to go back to for developing your own projects. Have bought previous courses from this instructor (eg. the PacMan one) and would love to see a series of courses, showing how to make other genres of classic arcade games (eg. Horiz/Vert shoot-em-ups, Beat-em-ups, twin stick shooters etc.). Well worth the asking price!
